Tonight on 'Idol' 'Everybody's boyfriend' versus 'the girl next door'

Sunday 29 May 2011

"Everybody's boyfriend" and the "girl next door." That's the way American Idol executive producer Ken Warwick describes the two teenagers who'll compete for this year's Idol title to USA TODAY's Bill Keveney.

Keveney spoke with Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery about coming down to the wire with two country singers and which might take the title.

"Scotty and I have a lot of the same fans, so I think it just depends on our performances," Lauren says. "Scotty has teenage girls rooting for him; I have little girls rooting for me. Scotty is going to be tough to beat."

Scotty adds, "A lot of people thought we'd be splitting votes and one would go home early, but they've kept us around and we're just glad to be here."

Keveney also spoke with producer Tricky Stewart, who has worked with both singers in the studio this season.

Stewart says Lauren has a "very special voice," but "She's still very young. You want her to know, 'You've done something not a lot of people in the world even have the courage to begin to do. (And) when you go out there, just be a little more sure of yourself.' Sometimes, she can get in her own head just a little bit."

As for Scotty, "He has an ability to make you feel you're the only one watching him when he's singing," Stewart says. "He's always had a surety about himself. That's what I call 'country swag.'

In Ken Barnes' latest Idol Meter post, he notes that, with both singers headed to the country market after the season ends, which one wins may not matter as much as it does in some years. However, he says, Scotty seems to have the stronger fan base. So if Lauren wants to beat him, tonight might be a good time to dramatically transform a song or sing it so well that viewers forget about the original.

Lockheed Martin to lay off 300 in South Carolina

Saturday 28 May 2011

Aerospace company Lockheed Martin Corp. Said Thursday it will cut 300 jobs at its Greenville, S.C. aircraft maintenance facility after it did not get a $104 million U.S. Navy contract.
Company spokesman B.J. Boling said Thursday that layoffs would begin within 30 days. Lockheed Martin's Greenville operation employs about 1,100 workers repairing military aircraft, including the Air Force's C-130 Hercules transport and the Navy's P-3 Orion.
The contract for the P-3 was awarded to L-3 Communications Corp. in Waco, Texas.
Lockheed Martin said laid-off workers will be offered career counseling and resume writing services.
Last year, the company reviewed its Greenville operations after finding wing fittings were improperly installed during maintenance work. Both the company and the military said no crews or planes were in danger as a result of the errors.
Bethesda, Md.-based Lockheed Martin has over 130,000 employees worldwide.

UFC 130 Fight Card Results: Frank Mir vs Roy Nelson

A welterweight bout between highly ranked Thiago Alves and up and coming Rick Story was the second bout on the UFC 130 pay-per-view card.
Alves, did not seem happy that the less experienced Story called him out. Alves has fought some of the best in the welterweight division, Georges St-Pierre, Jon Fitch, Matt Hughes, Chris Lytle and Josh Koscheck.
Story, on the other hand has not faced the level of competiton that Alves has, but he is on a five fight UFC winning streak and wanted to face the best available fighter in the division and he got his wish in Alves.
Story came out and threw hands to start the fight and went for the takedown which he did not gain, but he did land some strong knees to the legs of Alves.
Story spent a lot of time holding Alves up against the cage and minimizing the ability of Alves to throw.
The two fighters did exchange a few times and Story looked very comfortable exchanging with the more experienced Alves.
Story again looked for the takedown when the second round began, but he was unable to secure it, but he was able to hold Alves against the cage. He secured his second takedown attempt and the fighters were briefly on the ground before Alves then took Story down for a short while.
Story looked like a mini-Randy Couture, holding his opponent against the cage, making him hold his weight.
Story controlled the first two rounds of the fight and Alves was looking frustrated.
Alves opened the third round with some space and he was finally able to land his strikes, but Story once again took him to the cage. The two briefly exchanged strikes and Story again went to the clinch.
Story showed that not only could he throw hands, but that he could take the as well as he ate some heavy punches during the third.
As the clock ticked down Alves looked much stronger than Story, had this fight gone five rounds it very well could have gone to Alves, but it ended after three with the cards reading 29-28 for Rick Story, which the crowd seems to disagree with for some reason.
Story showed he was truly for real in this fight, so the next question would be, who and what's next for Story?

Doomsdayers put faith in Apocalypse now redux

It didn't take long for Apocalypse Now to add a whole bunch of one‑liners to the movie quote lexicon. Even before the mixed critical reception had coalesced into an iron-clad verdict, phrases from the screenplay by Francis Coppola, John Milius and Michael Herr (with a little help from Joseph Conrad) were already reverberating above and beyond their context in the film: "Saigon. Shit.","Terminate … with extreme prejudice", "Charlie don't surf!", "I love the smell of napalm in the morning", "Never get out of the boat", "The horror, the horror". And so on.
Screenplays are more than just dialogue, of course, yet a well-turned phrase can go a long way towards cementing a movie's cult status. Watching Casablanca nowadays is to experience a little thrill of recognition at every other line, and only partly because, "Play it, Sam" or, "Round up the usual suspects" have been adapted as titles for other movies. Ideally, a good quote is not only specific to its dramatic context, but has universal application. "We'll always have Paris" and "I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship" are the gifts that keep on giving.
You could say the same about The Wizard of Oz, or Some Like It Hot, or Sunset Boulevard – they're treasure troves for quote collectors. But Apocalypse Now, for me, marks the point at which film quotes became self‑conscious and lost their innocence, divorcing themselves from their dramatic source to become part of the currency of film buffery, a badge of cinematic taste enabling the quoters to trade references with like-minded pilgrims while baffling the uninitiated.
There's a minor character in Diner who does nothing but quote dialogue from Sweet Smell of Success – and not just JJ Hunsecker's catchphrase, "Match me, Sidney." But that always struck me as an idea more in tune with the film‑geek spirit of the 1980s, when the film was made, rather than 1959, when it was set. Because, surely not coincidentally, Apocalypse Now's release in 1979 coincided with the video recorder reaching the mass market, which for the first time enabled fans to hunt for verbal truffles, watch their favourite scenes repeatedly and commit scads of dialogue to memory without having to sit in a cinema.
The 1980s also saw a trend towards the vernacular, spearheaded by Bill Lancaster's dialogue for The Thing, in which characters reacted not with philosophical musings about hills of beans or, "We'll always have Antarctica", but by uttering the sort of banalities you or I might say if we'd just glimpsed a head sprouting spider legs and scuttling across the floor: "You've got to be fucking kidding." It seemed fresh and witty in 1982, but that was before a zillion other sci-fi, horror and action movies got in on the act. There are only so many ways you can say (to quote Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Terminator), "Fuck you, asshole".
We're lucky if a new movie can rustle up a single memorable one-liner, such as There Will Be Blood's "I drink your milkshake" (which though a colourful metaphor for capitalism seems out of character for Daniel Plainview, who never struck me as a milkshake-drinker) or the deceptively mild "That is all" from The Devil Wears Prada. But can you think of any films from the noughties that are as chock-full of quotable dialogue as Casablanca or The Shining? You're more likely to stumble across bon mots "borrowed" from other films, such as The Wizard of Oz. If I hear "I've a feeling we're not in Kansas any more" one more time (Avatar and Sex and the City 2 are just two of the recent offenders), I'll scream.
And, regardless of these films' other merits, I can't see buffs quoting the dialogue from The King's Speech or The Social Network in 30 years' time. Indeed, after perusing a list of this year's titles, the only phrase from any of them that has actually stuck in my brain is Rango's: "I found a human spinal chord in my fecal matter once." Which may not match "We'll always have Paris" for universal applicability, but I'm going to try and shoehorn it into my cocktail party chit-chat anyway.

More Midwest deaths...Suicide bomber strikes in Pakistan...Elizabeth Smart faces kidnapper

Thursday 26 May 2011

EL RENO, Okla. (AP) — Violent storms that have killed seven people in Kansas and Oklahoma, continued their trek into Arkansas Wednesday morning, killing at least one person, for a total of eight. Emergency officials say the death happened in the community of Denning, when a tornado ripped through. The deadly storms follow Sunday's twister in Joplin, Mo. that killed at least 122 people.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — A suicide bomber has killed five police officers in northwest Pakistan today. The bomber leveled a police building with an explosives-laden pickup truck. Some 30 people were injured. A police official says the bomber's target appears to have been a building that houses the police counter-terrorism unit.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is proposing that 7,000 peacekeeping troops go into Sudan after it becomes independent July 9. The troops would protect civilians and a mandate to help the new government prevent conflict and consolidate peace. Fighting that erupted last week threatens to unravel a 2005 peace deal that ended more than 20 years of civil war.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Elizabeth Smart is set to confront the man who kidnapped, raped and held her captive nine years ago. The Utah woman is expected to address a judge today at the sentencing hearing for Brian David Mitchell, who snatched Smart from her home in 2002 when she was 14.

PHOENIX (AP) — Three employees of Arizona's Maricopa County Sheriff's department are accused of drug smuggling and human trafficking. Under arrest are a deputy and two detention officers, and one officer says she's pregnant with the child of the drug ring's suspected leader.

Elizabeth Smart has what Casey Anthony needs

Two days after her toddler daughter was last seen alive, Casey Anthony asked to borrow a shovel from a neighbor, reportedly to dig up some bamboo.  Casey, 25, is now on trial for first-degree murder in the death of her daughter. Caylee Anthony, 2, was last seen alive on June 16, 2008.
The Florida-tyke wasn’t reported missing by her mother until a month later. A month that Casey  spent partying. That’s not alleged — there  is plenty of photographic evidence that clearly shows Casey having a good time. Whenever her friends inquired after her daughter’s whereabouts, Casey reportedly gave them various answers — Caylee was with a nanny. Caylee was at a theme park. Caylee was at the beach.
Never once did she mention to anyone that her daughter had drowned. Nor did she fit the image one would typically have of a bereaved parent.
Three days into the highly-publicized trial in the Orlando courtroom, Casey’s friends testified that she had been in good spirits throughout the month of June, 2008. She was the classic good-time party girl.
The case has drawn nationwide interest. CNN’s Nancy Grace and Geraldo Rivera were both in attendance for the opening day of trial. Dozens of people with absolutely no connection to the case stood in line eager to claim a  seat in what Nancy Grace refers to as  ”Tot-Mom trial.”
#
Casey Anthony’s defense attorney opened her trial on Monday with a startling statement — Caylee Anthony was not murdered. The toddler suffered an accidental drowning in the family’s pool. Moreover, the defense said, Casey’s father, George, helped cover up the drowning by burying his granddaughter in a wooded area not far from the family home.
The defense has yet to explain exactly why anyone would need to cover up an accidental drowning. Or why, if a child died accidentally in the backyard pool, her decomposed body would be found with duct-tape wrapped around her mouth. The exact cause of Caylee’s death could not be determined due to deterioration of the body. The girl’s body was not recovered from its shallow grave until six months after she went missing.Oh. Wait. There’s more. The defense alleges that George Anthony sexually molested Casey Anthony throughout her childhood. A charge that left George Anthony visibly upset and left Nancy Grace shaking her head and asking: If Casey’s father molested her throughout her childhood, why in the world would she then repeatedly leave her toddler daughter alone with him? I’m sure the defense will think of some nebulous answer for all that.  They’ll have to if they are to have any hope of keeping the Tot-Mom out of prison.
Casey, who has cried a great deal over the past few days, seems to finally understand that she’s in a bad way. She didn’t shed tears during that June when Caylee first went missing. Casey’s friends told the jury uthat she was “peppy”, happy even.

Smart gets justice at last: Rapist street preacher Mitchell gets life sentence

Fifty-seven year old Brian David Mitchell, who had kidnapped Elizabeth Smart in 2002 and had repeatedly raped her while holding her captive for 9 months, was sentenced to life imprisonment by a federal judge on Wednesday.
Mitchell had kidnapped Smart 9 years ago, when she was only 14.
During her captivity, Mitchell raped her repeatedly during the "nine months of hell," besides forcing her to view pornography, drink alcohol and watch him having sex with his Wanda Barzee. Finally Smart was rescued while she was walking with the kidnapper on a street in Salt Lake City on March 12, 2003.
The trial took a long time to begin as the defense attorneys said Mitchell was mentally ill and argued that as his action was tainted by delusional beliefs, he was not fit to stand for trial.
However, Mitchell did stand for trial and for the first time, faced his victim Elizabeth Smart face-to-face in court ever since she was rescued.

Elizabeth Smart, who is 23 year old now, appeared calm and composed as she stood in the witness box and testified. "I don't have very much to say to you. I know exactly what you did. I know that you know what you did was wrong. You did it with a full knowledge," Smart told Mitchell.
Mitchell, a homeless Mormon street preacher with long hair and beard, sang hymn quietly all the time in the court.
"I have a wonderful life now," Smart said, adding, "that no matter what you did will it affect me again. You took away nine months of my life that can never be returned, but in this life or next, you will have to be held responsible for those actions, and I hope you are ready for when that time comes."
On Wednesday, Smart testified the details about her ordeal. Mitchell snatched her from her bedroom on June 5, 2002. When she awoke that early morning, a jagged knife was close to her throat and she was forced to wear in white, religious robes and admit she is his wife. She was subjected to near-daily rapes while being forced to use alcohol and drugs.
Wanda Barzee, who is already serving a 15-year sentence in a federal prison hospital in Texas for her role in the kidnapping, testified that Mitchell believed he needed to take seven wives as part of a crusade to restore the Mormon Church to polygamy.
Smart said Mitchell was driven by his desire for sex, drugs and alcohol, not by any sincere religious beliefs. New York forensic psychiatrist Dr. Michael Welner, concluded Mitchell was "malingering" or faking a mental disorder to avoid prosecution.
"Nine months of living with him and seeing him proclaim that he was God's servant and called to do God's work and everything he did to me and my family is something that I know that God would not tell somebody to do," Smart said during the trial.
"Your perversion and exploitation of religion is not a defense. It is disgusting and it is an abuse that anyone should despise," her father Edward told Mitchell.
Later, Smart told the media that she "couldn't be happier" with the life sentence.
"Today is the ending of a very long chapter, and the beginning of a very beautiful chapter for me," she said.

Ed Schultz off MSNBC for vulgar criticism of Laura Ingraham

NEW YORK — MSNBC’s Ed Schultz is off the air for more than a week after calling a fellow talk-show host a vulgar term.
On his radio show, the liberal commentator referred to conservative host Laura Ingraham as a “right-wing slut.” He was apparently upset over her criticism of President Barack Obama’s overseas trip.
Schultz apologized on MSNBC on Wednesday to Ingraham, his family, MSNBC and viewers for the remark. He said it was wrong and uncalled for, and he recognized the severity of what he said.
MSNBC said the network and Schultz mutually agreed on a suspension that will take him off the air until June 6.

Perry Watch: Rumor du jour — Laura Ingraham says she’s been told that Perry’s going to run for president

WARNING: We do not vouch for the truth of any of the rumors that we repeat in this space. Texas Gov. Rick Perry insists he’s not running for president. And we believe him. But we feel you are entitled to hear what many of his conservative friends and supporters are saying.
Conservative radio talk show host and best-selling author Laura Ingraham got tongues wagging in Texas today when she declared that Rick Perry is running for president in 2012.
Ingraham was doing an interview with conservative Indiana congressman Mike Pence when she let loose with her Perry “scoop.”
According to the conservative blog Ace of Spades HQ, Ingraham revealed that “she knows someone very connected to Perry, and that guy says he’s in.”
OK, no named sources here. And this is third hand gossip, at best. But what the hay?
Ingraham has been a big Perry fan for a long time. He appeared on her show to bash President Obama, federal immigration policy, perceived federal “Texas-bashing” and the federal response to Texas wildfires. (She called them “wildflowers.” He called David Hartley, the Texan killed on Falcon Lake, “Steven” Hartley.)
In the exchange, Perry said President Obama is “more interested in trying out for Saturday Night Live” by telling jokes about the border than he is in solving problems.
“Americans don’t want a stand-up comic for president of the United States,” Perry told Ingraham. “They want a serious policy individual.”
And that serious policy individual would be who, governor?
Check out the conversation below:
The Ingraham rumor came a day after Perry set off a Texas Twitter-fest with a slip of the tongue during a TV interview with Fox News host Greta Van Susteren. Perry told the Fox personality, “You know, I hope the president of the United States would hear from the president of — or, excuse me, the governor of the second largest state in our nation.”

'Idol': Haley Reinhart with Tony Bennett, plus Scotty McCreery with Tim McGraw

Wednesday 25 May 2011

We return from commercial to a video tribute to Steven Tyler, a series of scats, bleeps and blue logos. "You should have seen the stuff we couldn't broadcast!" Ryan says afterward.

Haley Reinhart gets a great duet partner, too -- Tony Bennett, for a rendition of Steppin' Out With My Baby. She's swinging, and she's loving it. During the piano and guitar solos, the two wrap their arms around each other and step forward to dance together.

Next, Jennifer Lopez gets her own video segment, which features lots of auditioning contestants sucking up to her. And Casey Abrams kissing her.
Next performance slot goes to the surviving members of TLC and rapper Lil Jon (guess he's the new "L") for a medley that includes No Scrubs and Waterfalls, during which they're joined by the women of the Top 13.
After that, Scotty gets his moment in the spotlight, singing Live Like You Were Dying with Tim McGraw. Scotty steps up his game, vocally, in Tim's presence, and we get a real sense of what his performances could look at.
