WASHINGTON (AP) — A report says the U.S. could suspend hundreds of millions in military aid to Pakistan unless the two countries' fractured relations improve and Pakistan pursues militant groups more aggressively. The New York Times is reporting that the Obama administration is upset with Pakistan for expelling American military trainers and wants tougher action against the Taliban and others fighting American soldiers in Afghanistan.
KABUL,Afghanistan (AP) — Defense Secretary Leon Panetta says al-Qaida's defeat is "within reach." On his first visit to Afghanistan as Pentagon chief, Panetta said there's been enormous damage done to al-Qaida beyond the killing of Osama Bin Laden in May. Army Gen. David Petraeus says the gains raise the prospect of a "strategic dismantling of al-Qaida."
TOKYO (AP) — A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 hit Japan's northeastern coast on Sunday, prompting a tsunami warning for the area still recovering from a devastating quake and killer wave four months ago. Residents in coastal areas were warned to evacuate, but there were no immediate reports of damage. The epicenter of the quake was in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Japan's main island, Honshu.
RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. (AP) — Public and private memorial services will be held in California and Michigan this week for former first lady Betty Ford. They will be held Tuesday in Palm Desert, Calif., and in Grand Rapids, Mich., on Wednesday night. She will be buried Thursday next to her husband President Gerald Ford in Grand Rapids. Mrs. Ford died yesterday in California. She was 93
NEW YORK (AP) — People who want to visit the Sept. 11 memorial in New York City when it opens in two months will be able to start reserving tickets over the Internet, starting on Monday Visitors will be able to get timed passes to see the memorial, which opens to the public on Sept. 12, following events for victims' families on the attack anniversary a day earlier.
