Pittsburgh Steelers standout wide receiver Hines Ward was arrested early Saturday in Decatur, Ga., on a drunken driving charge, sheriff's officials said. The former Super Bowl MVP and reigning "Dancing With the Stars" champion was booked into the DeKalb County jail, just outside Atlanta, at 3:41 a.m. and charged with driving under the influence, authorities said. He was released on bond. (AP)
Poker • Play continued Saturday in the third day of first-round action of the World Series of Poker at the Rio casino in Las Vegas, and several big names already have been eliminated from the event — including former champions Doyle Brunson, Greg Raymer (a 1982 Parkway South High graduate), Chris Moneymaker and Jerry Yang. Saturday's field included St. Louisan Dennis Phillips, who finished third in 2008 (worth $4.5 million) and made another big run in 2009, finishing 45th to win $178,857. Also playing were defending champ Jonathan Duhamel, 2009 champion Joe Cada and Bobby Baldwin, the 1978 winner. And Boston Celtics star Paul Pierce was competing, along with comedians Ray Romano and Brad Garrett. Sunday is the finale of the four-day kickoff of the $10,000 buy-in event in which each participant plays in one session. Play continues through July 19, when a field that's expected to exceed 6,100 is cut to the nine who'll vie for the title this fall. (From news services)
Soccer • Italian standout Fabio Cannavaro announced his retirement, five years after captaining his country to the 2006 World Cup title. Cannavaro, 38, said an examination revealed his right knee would not hold up for the second and last year of his contract with Dubai club Al Alhi. Cannavaro is the only defender to be voted FIFA world player of the year, winning in 2006 after Italy conceded only two goals at the World Cup. He played in four World Cups in a 19-year professional career. (AP)
• Dan Meagher (SLUH) scored the first goal and assisted on another as the St. Louis Lions (4-6-3) dominated WSA Winnipeg 3-0 in Premier Development League action in Cottleville. Patrick Kelly and Kenny Kranz had the other goals while D.J. Lampert (Lutheran South) posted the shutout. Winnipeg is 3-10-1. ... The Imo's Under-16 boys team lost 2-0 to Club America Blue of California in the U.S. Youth Soccer National Presidents Cup Tournament in Des Moines, Iowa. Imo's (0-3) will play Holsten Valley FC of Tennessee (1-2) in a consolation game Sunday. (Joe Lyons)
College football • A talent scout whose relationship with the University of Oregon's program is under investigation by the NCAA also had ties to other schools. The Oregonian newspaper reported that Willie Lyles, a Houston-based talent scout who was paid $25,000 by Oregon for his scouting packages, billed California $5,000 and LSU $6,000 for similar packages that included game and highlight films of high school and junior college players from 22 states. The NCAA probe focuses on what exactly Oregon obtained from Lyles. In recent interviews, Lyles has said the Ducks knew he was selling access and influence with highly recruited players. (AP)
Horse racing • First Dude held off Game On Dude by a nose to win the $500,000 Hollywood Gold Cup, in suburban Los Angeles, giving Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert a 1-2 finish. With the victory, First Dude earned an automatic berth in the Breeders' Cup Classic this fall at Churchill Downs. First Dude ran 1 1/4 miles under Martin Garcia in 2:01.57 and paid $10.20, $4.80 and $3.20.(AP)
Tennis • John Isner will play Olivier Rochus in the final at the Hall of Fame tourney in Newport, R.I. Isner advanced with a 7-5, 7-6 (4) victory over Tobais Kamke. Rochus beat Michael Yani 6-2, 6-4. ... Roberta Vinci will face Irina-Camelia Begu in the final of the Budapest (Hungary) Grand Prix. Vinci beat Klara Zakopalova 6-4, 6-4. Begu stopped Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-4, 6-4. (AP)
Hockey • Minnesota signed defenseman Mike Lundin, 26, who had one goal and 11 assists in 69 games with Tampa Bay last year. (AP)
