(WBNG Binghamton) Starting next week, you may be waiting a little less to turn left at three busy intersections in Binghamton, and you could save some gas in the process.
The New York State Department of Transportation will add a flashing yellow left-turn signal at the intersections of Riverside Drive and Washington Street, Court Street and Liberty Street, and Court Street and Brandywine Avenue.
The signals will go into operation Tuesday, July 12.
There is already a designated left-turn lane with a green arrow where these streets meet. It allows motorists to make a protected left turn -- as other traffic is stopped at red lights.
The new yellow signal will make it so that drivers can turn, yielding to oncoming traffic.
The change will reduce delays for motorists making the left turn, and will make things more convenient for drivers especially during periods where there isn't a lot of traffic.
The DOT says this new signal has been successful in other states, but this effort in Binghamton marks the first effort in New York State.
