COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio Department of Commerce has started warning people about an email scam that tries to get personal financial information on Tuesday.
David Goodman, Director of the Ohio Department of Commerce, said the email claims to be an alert for international unclaimed funds which could be worth millions of dollars, 10TV News reported.
The message would also claim that an FBI agent has already vetted the situation and would assure it is legitimate.
"This email is a scam and we will not have Ohioans using the good name of the department of unclaimed funds in order to take money from Ohioans," said Goodman.
The scam does not ask for money but it does request personal bank account information.
A legitimate unclaimed funds situation would not require a third party, extra fees, or bank account information, 10TV News reported.
Director Goodman advised people who received this email to either delete it or report it to the Internet Crime Complaint Center.
