Tena reflects on ‘Harry Potter' role

Saturday, 16 July 2011

Natalia Tena has brought Nymphadora Tonks to life in four of the eight “Harry Potter” films. The 26-year-old actress first talked to Conexión during promotions of “Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix” in 2007. She also chatted with us before the U.S. release of the two subsequent “Potter” films.
A busy schedule — Tena sings and plays accordion in the London-based band Molotov Jukebox and this year played Osha in HBO's “Game of Thrones” — prevented Tena from talking to Conexión about playing Tonks a final time. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” the final installment in the popular series, is set for U.S. release July 15.
The British-born Tena, who's of Spanish descent and speaks Spanish fluently, has said she shares plenty of the same traits as Tonks and is still surprised by the “Harry Potter” phenomenon. Here's some more of what Tena has told Conexión over the years, including a candid (and colorful) 2010 interview done while Tena was nursing a hangover after a rowdy night of partying in London.
On playing the beloved Tonks character:
“I didn't like some of the things (filmmakers) did at the beginning, to be honest. I really wish she had had pink hair like in the book. They didn't want to do that because pink would be associated with (Dolores) Umbridge, who is evil. They really didn't take many risks,” Tena said in 2007. “At the beginning I really looked like a punk ... and they kind of toned (it) down a bit. And I wasn't happy with that because in my mind I was thinking, ‘You know what, that's not what kids are going to expect.'”
On what she and Tonks have in common:
“People always think I'm just kind of silly and wild and a bit out of control, but when it comes down to it, I can focus and be smart like (Tonks),” Tena said in 2010.
On Tonks' ability to change her hair color:
“I'm very much like her in that whatever my mood is I tend to change my hair color or do something different with it. ... I got dumped once and I went into the hairdresser and I was like, ‘Make it very short and black.' ... I've had pink hair, green hair, orange dreads. I've had watermelon hair where I had pink with green tips. From the age of 13 to about 19 or 20, I never had my real hair color,” the naturally brunette Tena said in 2009.
On her limited “Harry Potter” knowledge:
“I didn't know a (expletive) thing about ‘Harry Potter.' I knew of it, of course. You can't be in London and not know about the bloody thing,” Tena said in 2010 of her disinterest in “Harry Potter” before landing the Tonks role.
On the worldwide “Harry Potter” phenomenon:
“It's very overwhelming. You forget about it because you just go into work and do your scene and film. ... At the (London) premiere is when it really hit me again. You get there and there's people screaming your name. It's huge. You suddenly realize at that moment what a massive thing evolved and it is intimidating, but it's also quite exciting,” Tena said in 2009.
On the Tonks power she'd like to have:
Tena said in 2010 that if she could, she'd definitely choose the magical power of altering her hair color. “That would save money at the salon now, wouldn't it,” she joked.
