THE LeadSA campaign, in operation for less than a year, is a finalist in the Ubuntu category of the prestigious Loerie Awards for the contribution it has made to society.
LeadSA is an Independent Newspapers-Primedia Broadcasting initiative, supported by the Daily News, The Star, Pretoria News, Cape Argus and radio stations of Primedia.
LeadSA is aimed at a better South Africa, recognising the power and contribution of individuals in improving their lot, and the lives of others.
The Loeries are the Oscars of the local advertising industry. The Ubuntu award, started last year, recognises brands contributing to social or environmental change.
Alan Dunn, editor of the Daily News, said he looked forward to the winner announcement at the Loeries festival in Cape Town on the weekend of September 16-18.
“This campaign has come a long way in a short time, and we’re very proud to be part of an effort to make our country a better place. Acknowledgement like this spurs us on to great efforts.”
Primedia’s news director, Yusuf Abramjee, said nomination as a finalist was a great honour for all involved in the campaign: “LeadSA will only be celebrating its first year on August 4, so to get such recognition is quite amazing,” he said.
“We thank all the sponsors, the partners and the community for all the effort that they put into this initiative.
“Since we started last year we have reached three million people and it is amazing. We are really excited,” he said.
l The latest initiative of LeadSA is to get South Africans to sing Happy Birthday to Nelson Mandela on his 93rd birthday on Monday at 8.05am.
The Nelson Mandela Happy Birthday song is available for download: SMS the word MADIBA to 32929. SMSes cost R1.
