
* Falkirk lies in the central lowlands of Scotland between Edinburgh and Glasgow.
* The battle of Falkirk on July 22, 1298, saw the defeat of the leader of the wars of Scottish independence William Wallace, by King Edward 1.
* The town used to be the centre of UK’s iron and steel industry during the 18th and 19th centuries until production declined. Its factories also produced the carronade, a cast iron cannon, for the Royal Navy during the 1770s.
* It boasts a population of 35,000 people with many locals working at either the nearby BP refinery in Grangemouth, the newly opened Falkirk Royal Infirmary or at Alexander Dennis, one of the world’s largest bus manufacturers.
