Former Arizona Western football offensive lineman Aaron Douglas died on May 12 due to an accidental drug overdose, according to the office of the medical examiner in Jacksonville, Fla.
The autopsy report states Douglas died an accidental death from a combination of Methadone, Carisoprodol and Diazepam. Carisoprodol is sold under the brand name Soma and Diazepam is sold under the brand name Valium. According to the report, Douglas showed signs of congestion in his heart, lungs and liver.
Douglas played at AWC last fall after transferring from the University of Tennessee. Then in January he transferred to the University of Alabama, where he was expected to contribute immediately. Douglas was 21 at the time of his death, listed at 6 feet 6 inches tall, 296 pounds.
AWC did not comment on the report.
Douglas was found on the second-story balcony of a Fernandina Beach, Fla., home on the morning of May 12 following a party at the residence the night before.
On December 3, Douglas spoke to elementary school children at an assembly in Copperas Cove, Texas, advising them about the dangers of peer pressure, drugs and alcohol use. Douglas and the AWC football team were visiting the school before playing in the Heart of Texas Bowl, which was also played in Copperas Cove.
On December 23, Douglas was charged with driving under the influence near his hometown of Maryville, Tenn., according to the Daily Times of Maryville. The Daily Times reported Douglas pleaded guilty to the DUI charges on March 4, and that he would have to serve 48 hours in jail before serving the remaining 11 months, 29 days of his sentence on supervised probation.
“Kids are kids. It can happen to anyone,” AWC football coach Tom Minnick told the Yuma Sun after learning of Douglas DUI arrest in December.
