WINSTON-SALEM Knicks assistant
to take job with Wake Forest
Former New York Knicks assistant and executive Jeff Nix is Wake Forest's new director of basketball operations.
Coach Jeff Bzdelik announced the hiring Thursday. Nix spent 15 years in the Knicks' organization from 1992 to 2007, including eight years as an assistant, five years as the assistant general manager and two years as the director of scouting.
He replaces Walt Corbean, who was promoted to assistant coach after Mark Pope took a position on Brigham Young's coaching staff.
Bzdelik says the Deacons "hit a home run" in landing Nix. The two worked together in 1994-95 when Bzdelik was the Knicks' lead scout and Nix was one of Pat Riley's assistants. ASSOCIATED PRESS
Boston College assistant Joe Jones has been hired by Boston University to be its men's basketball coach.
The school announced that Jones would replace Patrick Chambers, who left this month after two years to become head coach at Penn State. Boston reached the NCAA tournament this season where it lost in the second round to Kansas.
Coach Steve Spurrier says South Carolina defensive back Victor Hampton must wait a while longer before he can return to the football team.
Spurrier said through an athletic spokesman that Hampton still has to "do some things" before he rejoins the Gamecocks. Hampton is a redshirt freshman who was dismissed from the program last week. However, he and Spurrier talked and a school spokesman confirmed that Hampton was back.
Hampton was expected to be a backup to starting cornerback Stephon Gilmore this fall.
Former Southern California football player Lonnie White says he took $14,000 in illegal payments during his four-year career in the 1980s, mostly by selling game tickets allotted to scholarship players.
White made the admission Wednesday in a first-person story for The Daily, an online publication. He was a sports writer at the Los Angeles Times from 1987 to 2008.
White was a receiver and special-teams player at USC, where he played under John Robinson and Ted Tollner from 1982 to 1986.
Ohio State trustees will spend up to six weeks reviewing the athletic program after the scandal that led to the suspension of five players and the forced resignation of football coach Jim Tressel.
In the first public comments from a member of the board of decision-makers that oversees the university, trustee Robert Schottenstein added that the school reported every alleged football team violation it was aware of to the NCAA.

After serving his time for a doping ban that crossed a world-record and more off his resume, Justin Gatlin won his preliminary heat in the 100 at U.S. Nationals in Eugene, Ore.
Gatlin finished in 10.08 seconds and will join 2007 world champion Tyson Gay, 2009 national champion Michael Rodgers and Olympic bronze medalist Walter Dix in the group of 18 vying for three spots on the U.S. world team today.

Kia Vaughn had 24 points and Cappie Pondexter added 23 to lead New York to a 94-82 victory over host Tulsa, snapping a four-game losing streak.

The father of Carolina Panthers player Armanti Edwards has been found guilty of murder in Greenwood, S.C.
Solicitor Jerry Peace said Freddie Edwards, 63, was given a 30-year sentence after being found guilty of murder.
Edwards got into a fight over a game of poker with George Freeman in Greenwood, according to Greenville television station WYFF. Edwards shot Freeman in the face with a .357 magnum on July 15, 2005.
New York Jets backup quarterback Erik Ainge told The Associated Press that his playing career is over because of injuries to his right foot and throwing shoulder.
