Top up for rescue chopper

A welcome government funding boost is helping the TECT TrustPower Rescue Helicopter Trust to keep its emergency rescue craft flying.
Western Bay politicians Health Minister Tony Ryall and Tauranga MP Simon Bridges presented the cheque for $53,996 to pilot Liam Brettkelly at an afternoon tea attended by police, St John ambulance and Tauranga Hospital staff.
With recent tough economic times, corporate sponsorship of air ambulance services has thinned, says Tony.
This cheque is a share of the $1 million the government’s spending on the air ambulance sector this year.
The Tauranga based helicopter provides a vitally important service transporting critically ill or injured people to medical facilities, says Simon.
“Strong community and sponsorship support remains critical and accounts for around half the cost of providing this vital community service,” says Simon.
“In these tight economic times, rising costs and a reduction in sponsorship and community support continues to put extra pressures on all air ambulance providers, including the TrustPower TECT Rescue Helicopter Trust.”
The air ambulance support is part of a $48 million package over four years to support the implementation of the New Zealand Ambulance Services Strategy announced last year, which includes 100 extra paramedics and additional training for rural ambulance staff.
