Could a Dog Park be in Perry Hall's Future?

A few months back, in this very column, we explored the virtues of local dog parks. I am pleased to say that the article has prompted conversations about a possible dog park in Perry Hall. Some residents and readers were so interested that a Facebook page was started and possible venues were discussed.

One pet owner in favor of a dog park in Perry Hall even entered the community in a contest to win funding for building and maintaining a dog park. The contest, sponsored by PetSafe, is called Bark For Your Park. Learn more about it and vote for Perry Hall on the website.

Clearly, folks in our community are passionate about this issue. Perhaps it is time for our elected officials to represent all of their constituents, including pet owners. 

With efforts to include an off-leash dog play area at Patterson Park moving forward, at least Perry Hall residents will soon not have to go to Harford County for the closest place to let their pooch romp.

As a transplant from Washington, D.C., there is one thing I know for sure about the Perry Hall area—it is full of pet lovers who enjoy taking their dogs out and about with them. It makes sense for this community to enjoy a dog park. 

Dog parks are a draw for any community seeking to attract families and responsible singles. Not only do they add a marketable recreational feature, they to help build safer communities where people are engaged, talk and know one another.    

Some off-leash dog parks have trees or shaded areas, others offer a sort of jungle gym for dogs. Some even have water features, but all that is really required is a securely fenced-in area where dogs can socialize, romp and play. Of course, park rules and guidelines help keep everyone safe and ensure the park remains a positive resource for the community. 

Community dog parks benefit people, dogs, neighbors and communities. The drawbacks are few and entirely manageable through good, sound planning.
